Die Chicago Abendpost Kalender for 1937 is described as “The Yearbook for the German-American Family” on the German language title page. It was published for years by The Abendpost (Evening News) Co. in Chicago for the area’s many German speaking citizens.
The rare illustrated 7-1/8 x 9-3/8 inch, 128-page German language softcover calendar and special information annual starts with illustrated calendars for each month which are accompanied by important historical facts ranging from Hannibal victory at Cannae in 216 BC to the death of Frederick the Great and Manfred von Richthofen, the start of World War I, and the birth of Adolf Hitler.
This is followed by chapters on American history and American presidents, information about the parliamentary system in the US, American holidays, how to become an American citizen, information for German immigrants about marriage and divorce, inheritance laws, etc.
There is also news about the homeland Nazi Germany, the 1933 population statistics (right) and the addresses and phone numbers of important offices of the German government (below), lists of meeting places for the many German Clubs in Chicago and Milwaukee, recipes for typical German food, etc.
Interspersed in the text are eight glossy pages with pictures of scenic sights in Germany, the US and Austria as well as new Nazi Luftwaffe airplanes, the Reichsautobahn, the Zeppelin factory at Speyer (where men are working on “an American order for an advertising zeppelin”) and sailors of the German Kriegsmarine in training.
There is advertising in German for the Bismarck Hotel and Bismarck Keller in Chicago, the Abendpost and Sonntagpost newspapers, butcher shops and delikatessens, pharmacies, radio repair shops, insurance companies, advertising and travel agencies run by people with German names. There is even a full-page ad for the UfA German film company and the UfA office in NY.
