This 81 year old example of So Kämpfte Finnland is in very nice used condition with a tight spine and no odor. The dust jacket is a fasimile of an original in our archive.
This is a very nice example of the rare 8-1/4 x 10-5/8 inch, 144 page, very heavily illustrated, softcover book So Kämpfte Finnland (That Is How Finland Fought) as published in 1941 by SS publisher Wiking Verlag in Berlin, Germany. This superb Nazi photo book is made very much in the style of Heinrich Hoffmann photo books of the Third Reich period.
The book was written by Oberst J.O. Hannula and tells the whole story of the Finnish-Russian war of 1939 and 1940 in German text and pictures. Maps explain the Soviet sneak attack at the end of November 1939 and big half- and full-page photographs clearly show the unexpectedly fierce resistance of the Fins who were backed by the Wehrmacht.
Every aspect of the defense of Finland and the destruction of the Red Army invaders is shown in great detail right down to the German equipment used by the Finnish armed forces. In the end, the landscape of Finland was littered with the equipment and bloody bodies of the men and women of the Soviet Army and Air Force. Lots of rare photos of Finnish soldiers (even Finnish troops on skis with reindeer as pack animals), Soviet and Finnish equipment (including a rare Finnish propellor driven snow mobile), women and children on the home front, battle damage, Finnish President Kallio with with a huge double-barrel FLAK gun, Finnish nurses caring for wounded soldiers, graves of Finnish soldiers, etc., etc.
The author has included a short Finnish-German language lesson in order to familiarize German readers with important aspects of the Finnish language.
Approximately 70,000 Finns were wounded or died during the Soviet-Finnish "Winter War" of 1939-1940. The magnitude of the enormous Soviet losses is still being debated today.
