The Illustrierter Beobachter (JB or Illustrated Observer) was the Nazi Party German language weekly photo tabloid published in München (Munich) by Nazi Party Publishing House Verlag Franz Eher Nachfolger, but read by just about everybody, all over Nazi Germany, Austria and other countries with a German speaking population. This is the 26 November 1936 edition of Illustrierter Beobachter with a cover photo showing Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler explaining the expansion of the SS-Standarte Deutschland barracks to Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess while looking at an architectural model.
The big 11 x 15 inch, 50 page newspaper starts with a report about the meeting of 800 (!) Gauamt leaders at Ordensburg Vogelsang with the leadership of the Nazi Party and State. The article has photos of participants and speakers such as Dr. Robert Ley, Reinhard Heydrich, Reichssportführer Tschammer und Osten, Rudolf Hess, Generalfeldmarschall von Blomberg, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Reichsfrauenführerin Getrud Scholtz-Klink and others.
Another multi-page article is about the SS-Standarte Deutschland. The article has many photos of the Standard’s facilities (including the horse stables), and men during shooting practice, physical education, even one of SS-Standartenführer Felix Steiner, the leader of the SS-Standarte Deutschland (shown below).
Other photo features are about the acknowledgement of the new Spanish government by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, the ongoing Spanish civil war, the opening of the big anti-Communist exhibition in Munich (“Battle the World Enemy!”), stage make-up, the victory of the Nordic race, new fashion trends in skirts (longer or shorter), left-handed children in England, and more.
This popular 11 x 15 inch Nazi news magazine also contains a few short stories, humorous cartoons, crossword puzzles, and advertising for cigarettes, Olympia typewriters, Mobil oil, Salamander shoes, Rolleiflex and Zeiss-Ikon cameras, Miele vacuum cleaners, DKW car parts, Kaffee-Hag instant coffee, Palmolive soap, Cinzano, Dr. Oetker baking products, and many other consumer products.
This Nazi Party newspaper (or magazine) is priced in Groschen (Austrian fractional currency) so it was obviously originally sold in Austria and not in Germany. This 86 year old edition of Illustrierter Beobachter is complete, in nice used condition and it has no writing, nothing torn out and no offensive odor. The folded edge or spine has a few short horizontal tears due to its age.
