RARE ILLUSTRATED NAZI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDRENS BOOK 1943 |
Fröhlicher Anfang or Cheerful Beginning is a heavily color and black & white illustrated Third Reich primer for elementary school children in Saarland and Lothringen (Lorraine, now part of France). On the title page it says the book was approved by the Nazi Education Minister on 2 December 1940, and this is a 1943 edition with lovely illustrations by Else Wenz-Viëtor and others. Nazi children’s books such as this one were specifically targeted by Allied de-Nazification programs and thus they are far rarer than many other National Socialist books.
A previous owner of this book trimmed off a narrow part of the white margin on the opening edge of the frontispage (probably because the owner’s name was stamped there) but the Hitler picture IS complete and in nice condition as shown. The pages have yellowed slightly but the color illustrations are bright.

In beautifully illustrated pictures and simple syllables, as well as progressions of consonants and vowels, this excellent 6-3/8 x 8-3/4 inch, 84-page book was used to teach German children proper pronunciation along with practical lessons about food and eating, children’s amusements and playthings, animals, the weather, hygiene, family, games, the seasons, holidays, fairytales, soldiers and pilots, Hansel and Gretel, etc.
There are quite a few mentions of Adolf Hitler and Heil Hitler! in the text. However, it would still be a very effective method of teaching English and other speakers to properly pronounce German words, even today!

The frontispiece is a picture of Adolf Hitler with a small girl, and the school boy and girl on the front cover are giving the Hitler salute. The color and black & white illustrations show boys and girls with animals, acting like soldiers, playing on the street, at school, sledding, as well as food, flowers, tools, and a Christmas tree with presents including wooden soldiers.

This Nazi elementary school primer is complete and perfectly readable with none of the pictures defaced or damaged.
