A lot of detailed information is available online about the Italian ocean liners MS Saturnia and MS Vulcania, the sister ships which were classic examples of naval architecture when they were built and launched in the mid-to-late 1920s. The ocean liners made voyages to and from Italy to North America as well as cruises in times of peace, but also served as a hospital ship and troop transport during World War II. 

Offered for sale on this USMBOOKS web page are three absolutely original Saturnia Vulcania brochures published by the Italia Societa di Navigazione for prospective customers. Two are in Italian and one in the English language, all were printed in Italy.

The 11 x 19 inch blue fold-out brochure shown above right is in the English language and has illustrations of the “New Tourist Class” facilities of Italian Line ocean liners MS Saturnia and MS Vulcania. Pictured are the main and upper dining salons, the swimming pool, bar, veranda, one and two bed cabins, writing and music rooms.

All three 80+ year old, pre-World War II Saturnia Vulcania brochures are complete without any writing on them, and they have no offensive odor. Postcards of the Italian ocean liners MS Saturnia and MS Vulcania are easily found, but not 1930s brochures such as these!

The First Class Saturnia Vulcania brochure shown above left measures 9 x 7-1/8 inch and has 20 glossy pages with captioned full-page photos of the MS Saturnia and MS Vulcania. They show the ballroom, veranda, dining rooms, bar, reading room, swimming pool and examples of single and double rooms and rooms with a balcony.

The 12-page Saturnia Vulcania brochure with the red lettering on the cover measures 7-½ x 7-¾ inches and shows the somewhat more modest accommodations for passengers traveling in Tourist Class. It is dated 1938 or XVI, the 16th year since the 1922 Fascist March on Rome.
