OF SCHNÖLL MARBLE FROM
THE MOSAIC HALL OF THE
REICHSCHANCELLERY OF
ADOLF HITLER IN BERLIN

Few public buildings in the world will ever generate the kind of interest generated by the mere mention of the name "Hitler's New German Reichschancellery in Berlin."

The building was spectacular, constructed of the finest available materials, a mysterious witness to the most dramatic events of 20th century history, and was for a brief period the principal office of the most powerful secular ruler in European history, Nazi Party Führer Adolf Hitler.
The 9 x 9 cm (3-1/2 x 3-1/2 inch) slab of original Reichschancellery Mosaic Hall Schnöll marble we offer for sale here is attached to the bottom panel of an 8-1/2 x 9-1/2 inch custom-made easel/display case that has been serial numbered, dated and signed by a pair of expert authenticators. The polished face or top surface of this piece of Rotgrau Schnöll Marmor (reddish-grey Schnoell marble) was once a part of one of the darker bands of Schnöll marble that separated the huge mosaic panels that adorned the side walls of the Mosaic Hall in the New Reichskanzlei (Reichschancellery) on the corner of Voßstraße and Wilhelmplatz in central Berlin.

The Mosaic Hall measured 19.2 x 46.2 x 15.8 meters high (63 feet wide by 151 feet long by 52 feet high). It was used on many special occasions during the Third Reich, for both gala and very somber events. The funerals of both SS-General and Acting Reichsprotector of Bohemia and Moravia Reinhard Heydrich and Air Force General and builder of the Reichsautobahn, Dr. Ing. Fritz Todt, took place in the Mosaic Hall. So did the ceremonies to celebrate Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday in 1939.

Adolf Hitler's architect, 33 year old Professor Albert Speer chose the very special reddish-grey Austrian marble for cladding in the most striking of the public rooms in the New Reichschancellery because of its fiery and smoky red color, which all observers (including Hitler) connected with the Nazi Movement.

The piece of marble offered here was carefully examined prior to mounting in its case by both Ray and Josephine Cowdery (authors of the highly regarded book The New German Reichschancellery in Berlin 1938 - 1945 - available at amazon.com) and declared authentic by them. The 6 x 7 inch Certificate of Authenticity attached to the inside of the top panel of the display case bears a serial number 1 matching both the piece of Rotgrau Schnöll Marmor from the Reichskanzlei and the case, as well as the signatures of both Josephine and Ray Cowdery beneath a full-color picture of the Mosaiksaal where this piece originated.

The Cowdery’s probably have more exposure to and experience with the construction materials used in the New Reichschancellery than anyone else on earth, and they take the matter of authentication of original pieces very seriously.

The magnificent handmade replica of the Führerstandarte on the front panel of the display case is a work of art all by itself.

The main portion is a very heavy, thick piece of pure copper measuring 75 x 75 mm (just under 3 x 3 inches), handfilled with red, white and black hard fired cloisonné (glass - not paint), then polished and plated in 24k gold. Surrounding the swastika in the center is a 50 mm (2 inch) deep relief gold wreath of oak leaves, and in each corner there are beautifully die-struck alternating eagles and swastikas of the German Army and the Nazi Party.

The New Reichschancellery was opened in January 1939 and was badly damaged during World War II. The Russian occupiers of Berlin destroyed what remained of the building in the winter of 1949 and used the material to erect monuments to themselves in Berlin and its suburbs.
