Very well done pen & ink illustrations compliment the big photographs (photo captions are in German, English, French and Italian) and a very well-written German text. This book is a must for serious students of Hitler and the National Socialist Movement and those interested in the history of Bavaria and München, die Hauptstadt der Bewegung.
A section from the end papers of this book is shown at the top of this USMBOOKS webpage. The Wappen or shield-shaped coat of arms of Munich was changed during the Third Reich to include a Nazi eagle and swastika.
Written and illustrated by a hand-picked group of eleven Nazis, this book begins with a full-page tipped-in art print of the Professor Richard Klein bust of German Führer, Adolf Hitler. It is followed by a recap of the history of the Bavarian city and its importance to the NSDAP and the Third Reich. Excellent full-page photos on high-quality glossy paper provide a virtual tour not only of the major National Socialist sites like the House of German Art, Feldherrnhalle, Honor Temples and Führerbau in München, but also of other general and architectural sites in and around Munich.
This is an excellent First Edition of the rare 8-1/4 x 11-1/2 inch, 134 page, very heavily illustrated hardcover book München Vom Wesen einer deutschen Stadt (Munich - Essence of a German City), the brainchild of Munich Mayor and Reichsleiter Karl Fiehler as published by Verlags und Vertriebs GmbH in München, Germany in 1939.
This original 85 year old example of München Vom Wesen einer deutschen Stadt is in very good used condition with its original dust jacket (shown left) featuring a design by Hans Jörg Schuster.
The book has no odor.
The reference photo on the right shows one of the original Third Reich München city Wappen or coat of arms which still exists on a building across from Heinrich Hoffmann's old studio on Schellingstrasse in Munich. After World War II, rather than to remove the Wappen, someone simply removed the Nazi eagle and swastika that once was carved above the city gate, where the USMBOOKS watermark is.
